Rich Van Tassel
President, Royal Oaks Building Group, LLC
Richard "Rich" Van Tassel is President of Royal Oaks Building Group, LLC, a home building company he founded in 2002 in Raleigh, North Carolina. During Rich’s second year in business with Royal Oaks, he built 38 homes with $6.8 million in total revenue. By 2006, Royal Oaks Building Group was listed by the Triangle Business Journal as the 18th largest builder by volume in the Raleigh-Durham and the 12th fastest growing, privately held company in the Triangle on the Fast 50 list, with 131 homes and $28.8 million in revenue. This spectacular growth has been the result of solid business planning.
With 15 years of experience in the construction industry, Rich opened Royal Oaks without a financial backer or seed money, using his own savings. Royal Oaks differentiates itself within its market because it is locally owned and operated. The company has the reputation as the builder with “more”—more standard features to choose from and more changes and customization allowed. Within the next five years, Rich plans to become known as the best homebuilder in Raleigh. Some important awards and distinctions have been milestones toward that goal. During his career, Rich has directed the entries of two Gold Award-winning homes in the Raleigh-Wake County Home Builders Association (HBA) Parade of Homes in 1997 and 1998. In 2000, he served on the Parade of Homes Committee. In 2004, he directed the entry and construction of a Silver Award-winning home in the Raleigh-Wake County HBA Parade of Homes. Rich was honored with the Triangle Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award in 2007. This prestigious award recognizes the Triangle’s most influential and highly accomplished young leaders under the age of 40.
Growing up in Pittsburgh, Rich was familiar with construction as a boy. He and his father helped two uncles build their own homes. Beginning when Rich was a senior in high school and throughout his time in college, he and his father built a second home for their family. After graduating from North Carolina State University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, Rich obtained an entry-level position as field engineer with J.A. Jones Construction Company. He was assigned to the Magnetic Silencing Facility on the U.S. Naval Kings Bay Submarine Base in St. Mary’s, Ga. However, he was not satisfied working for someone else for very long.
As President and Founder of Sigbro Construction Company, Inc., Rich grew the company from a framing subcontractor to a custom homebuilding company from October 1993 to March 1998, with a volume of $3.5 million per year in a five-year period. After negotiating the merger of Sigbro Construction Company with Park Homes, Rich became Chief Operating Officer and Vice President, managing sales and construction of a $12 million-per-year business. After directing a 30% expansion of the company, Rich sold his stock to his partners and left to open his own homebuilding firm in March of 2002. Today, Rich is President of Royal Oaks Building Group, L.L.C., a licensed Realtor, and a member of the Raleigh Regional Board of Realtors and the Triangle MLS. He has maintained membership in the Raleigh-Wake County Home Builders Association since 1994. His business demands most of his time, yet Rich is an active member of his community and the Triangle in many other ways.
Working to meet the health and service needs through the largest not-for-profit community service organization in America, Rich is a longtime member of the Cary YMCA and has managed the capital campaign for Southwest Wake County YMCA. He also supports young athletes through his membership in The Wolfpack Club, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for North Carolina State University student athletes and provides much of the budget for all phases of the Athletics Department at N.C. State. An active Rotarian working to address various community and international service needs, Rich has been a member of the Apex Rotary Club since 1997. He was voted Rotarian of the Year in 2003 and served as Director of Community Affairs in 2005. From 2005 to 2006, he served as President of the Club. Rich became eligible for Paul Harris Fellow recognition when his personal donations to the Club exceeded $1,000 in 2002.
Rich also volunteers for a charity called “Life Experiences, Inc.,” a nonprofit organization that blends education, training and the free enterprise system to create and operate businesses which provide fulfilling employment for adults with developmental disabilities, allowing them to function as independent, productive citizens of the Triangle. Rich has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Golf and Auction Committee, has helped raise $85,000 for the charity. As a donor and volunteer for The Miracle League in Cary, Rich helps to provide opportunities to all children with special needs to play baseball, regardless of their abilities. This nonprofit organizations works to increase community awareness, provide sustaining funding, and construct and maintain special facilities that meet the unique needs of the young baseball players and their families.
Rich resides in Apex, North Carolina with his wife, Debby, and their four children. The family attends church at St. Michael the Archangel in Cary.
